THOUGHT

Why Hospitality Must Help Us Do Hard Things

Somewhere along the way, hospitality became obsessed with comfort.

Soft towels.

Room service.

Predictability.

But what if that’s not what people actually want — or need?

In my recent podcast conversation, @Jannes Sörensen, founder of @Kepler Hotel Group and @Kepler International Hospitality Academy, said something very counterintuitive.

"The most successful people on the planet, the one thing they don’t want is comfort… what hospitality will ultimately do is help people do the difficult human things"

Think about it.

AI can suggest your meals — but it can’t choose broccoli over cake for you.

It can track your sleep — but it can’t build a loving marriage.

What truly fulfils us is not convenience.

Its growth.

And growth is uncomfortable.

Marathons, mountain climbs, cold plunges…

We chase challenge not despite being human — but because we are human.

Imagine a new vision for hospitality:

Not just as a place to rest… but as a platform for a better life.

Hotels that don’t just offer escape — they offer elevation.

Restaurants that don’t just serve food — they serve meaning.

A hospitality that stretches us, strengthens us, and connects us.

Isn’t it time we stopped selling comfort… and started designing discomfort — on purpose?

What if the next frontier in hospitality was human growth?

Let’s rethink the brief.

Hospitality as a force for becoming.

When a crisis hits, unprepared teams freeze. Prepared ones adapt — because they’ve already rehearsed the hard stuff. Legendary Coach Bill Belichick said on being ready: “Preparation is never wasted, regardless of outcome.” This is true in kitchens, boardrooms, and football fields. THOUGHT Rethinking Profit: A New Era for Hospitality Inspired by a meaningful lunch with Lars Kure Juul — always a spark for Maverick thinking. What if the profits we’ve been chasing were never real? Just numbers built on borrowed time and borrowed trust? For too long, we’ve treated the planet, our teams, and our guests as infinite resources. But now, the cracks are showing. People are tired. Landing…not launchingI’m treating the first weeks of the year as a landing, not launchingI no longer tend to view January 1st as a fresh start, a new beginning……but a continuation of the life and impact I’m trying to build.I believe that all this extra pressure on our lives is for no good reason. Just look at the amount of “new-year-new-me” content out there right now.January isn’t the start of a new...
