THOUGHT

Is My Situation Really a Problem?

Winston Churchill once said, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.”

But when facing big challenges, it’s hard not to see the situation as a crisis.

  • You’re stuck
  • Revenue channels aren’t flowing
  • Your team is struggling
  • and every strategy feels like it’s hitting a wall.

But here’s the twist: what if the real problem isn’t the problem itself?

I was listening to a podcast with Tim Ferries over the summer where Dan Sullivan reframes this beautifully:

“The problem is not the problem; it’s how you view the problem.”

We often think, “This shouldn’t be happening!” or “We just need to fix this.”

But what if you stepped back and asked yourself:

- Is this a problem I need to solve?

- Could it be approached differently?

- Could someone else tackle it better?

- Do I have the capacity to do this?

- Do I have the skills to do this?

- Are there enough resources to do this?

- Most importantly, could this roadblock save you from pursuing the wrong path entirely?

Once you shift your perspective, the problem transforms from an obstacle into an opportunity for clarity.

By re-examining your assumptions and asking better questions, you open the door to new solutions.

Instead of being paralysed by frustration, you find new ways forward, often ones more aligned with your true goals.

Not every crisis comes with a Willy Wonka Golden Ticket, but the work you do through it might just reveal the next best step.

What problem are you currently facing that feels like a dead end?

Could a shift in perspective change the way you approach it?

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

When a crisis hits, unprepared teams freeze. Prepared ones adapt — because they’ve already rehearsed the hard stuff. Legendary Coach Bill Belichick said on being ready: “Preparation is never wasted, regardless of outcome.” This is true in kitchens, boardrooms, and football fields. Just numbers built on borrowed time and borrowed trust? For too long, we’ve treated the planet, our teams, and our guests as infinite resources. But now, the cracks are showing. People are tired.
